Worldmade is a global programme to supply large numbers of appropriate wheelchairs through a network of wheelchair services all over the developing world.
The first ten wheelchair users to receive Worldmade wheelchairs live in South Africa. These pioneers are trialling the wheelchair and giving feedback before a larger shipment is delivered.
The dirt tracks in the townships around Capetown are rough and difficult to push along in a normal wheelchair. The local thorn bushes cause many punctures, so these triallers are testing puncture proof solid tyres. Many of the wheelchair users experienced a significant improvement in posture and ease of mobility in the Worldmade wheelchair.
The Worldmade wheelchair is suitable for people who have a range of disabilities: Spinal Cord Injury, Amputation and Polio being the most common. The Worldmade service is particularly suited to organisations like Hospitals, NGOs and INGOs who need to establish wheelchair provision quickly, where there is no local production of appropriate wheelchairs.
